Struck-By and Work Zones Stand-Down Kit

Help your crew stay out of the path of trucks, loads, and falling objects. Includes a story, site walk, quiz, and pocket cards.

Why it matters

Struck-by is one of OSHA's Focus Four hazards, the four that cause the most deaths in construction. These events happen fast, and often because everyone thought someone else had it covered. A short talk and a walk of your own site can change where people stand and how they move around equipment.

What it covers

  • Four ways you get hit: Flying, falling, swinging, and rolling, with examples crews will know.
  • Backing equipment: What OSHA requires when a driver cannot see behind the vehicle, and how spotters should work.
  • Be seen: When to wear high-visibility gear and why night and early morning work are harder.
  • Work zones: Why signs, cones, barricades, and flaggers follow a traffic control plan and should not be moved.
  • Loads and swing areas: Stay out from under suspended loads and out of the swing radius of cranes and excavators.
  • Falling objects: Hard hats, keeping tools back from edges, and not working under someone else.

Hands-on activity

In the Blind Spot Walkaround, an operator sits in a parked machine while the crew walks around it and cones off every spot the operator cannot see. Longer versions add a site walk where small groups mark places a vehicle, load, or falling object could hit someone, fix what they can, and report the rest.
