Heat Illness Stand-Down Kit

Water, rest, shade, acclimatization, and what to do when someone goes down. Ready before heat season.

Why it matters

Heat illness hits new and returning workers hardest in their first days, and it can turn from cramps to a medical emergency fast.

What it covers

  • Water. About a cup every 15 to 20 minutes during heat, even when you’re not thirsty.
  • Rest and shade. Scheduled breaks in shade, more often as the heat index climbs.
  • Acclimatization. New and returning workers build up over about a week, starting with no more than 20 percent of a normal day’s heat exposure.
  • Heat exhaustion. Heavy sweating, cool clammy skin, dizziness, headache, nausea. Move to shade, cool down, hydrate.
  • Heat stroke. Confusion, slurred speech, passing out, or seizures. Call 911 and cool the person immediately. It’s an emergency.
  • Buddy system. People rarely notice heat illness in themselves first.

Hands-on activity

Heat plan check: find the water, shade, and cool-down spots for every work area on the site, time the walk from the farthest point, and fix any gaps before the first hot day.
