Silica Stand-Down Kit

Cutting, grinding, and drilling concrete and masonry without the dust.

Why it matters

Silica dust from concrete, masonry, and stone causes silicosis and lung cancer, and the damage doesn’t show up for years.

What it covers

  • The standard. OSHA’s construction silica rule (1926.1153) sets a limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter averaged over 8 hours.
  • Table 1. For common tasks, following the controls in Table 1 (water, vacuum dust collection, and respirators where required) is how most contractors comply.
  • Water and vacuums. Wet cutting and tools with HEPA-filtered dust collection stop most dust at the source.
  • Housekeeping. No dry sweeping or compressed air where it puts dust in the air.
  • Written plan and competent person. Every employer needs a written exposure control plan and someone to make sure it’s followed.

Hands-on activity

Dust demo: cut a block dry and wet, side by side, with a flashlight behind the cut so everyone can see the dust they’d be breathing.
