Electrical Safety Stand-Down Kit
Cords, GFCIs, temporary power, and overhead lines.
Why it matters
Electrocution is one of the Focus Four, and most jobsite electrical injuries come from the ordinary stuff: damaged cords, missing GFCIs, and equipment near overhead lines.
What it covers
- GFCI protection. Every 120-volt, 15- and 20-amp temporary receptacle needs a GFCI, unless the site runs an assured equipment grounding conductor program.
- Cords. Inspect before use. Damaged jackets, missing ground pins, and taped splices take a cord out of service.
- Overhead lines. Equipment stays at least 10 feet from lines up to 50 kV, and farther for higher voltages. Assume every line is energized.
- Lockout and tagging. Circuits are de-energized and tagged before work on them.
- Water. Keep cords and tools out of standing water.
Hands-on activity
Cord inspection line: everyone brings their cords and tools; inspect each one together and tag out anything that fails.
