Kit MH-01 · Coming April

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Stand-Down Kit

How to notice when someone’s struggling, start the conversation, and connect them to help. Ready for Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

Why it matters

Construction has one of the highest suicide rates of any industry. Crews spend more waking hours together than with family, which puts coworkers in the best position to notice.

What it covers

  • Warning signs. Changes in mood, withdrawing, talking about being a burden, giving things away, increased drinking, or a run of close calls.
  • Ask directly. Asking someone whether they’re thinking about suicide does not put the idea in their head. It opens the door.
  • Listen and stay. Don’t try to fix it. Stay with them and help them reach help.
  • Where to call. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, by call or text. Your company’s employee assistance program, if it has one.
  • Leaders set the tone. When a foreman talks about it, the crew learns it’s okay to.

This kit is awareness material, not counseling or crisis care. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Hands-on activity

Wallet card and contacts: everyone puts 988 and the company assistance program number in their phone during the stand-down, together, so nobody has to look it up on the worst day.
